Apple’s WWDC keynote

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Apple is known for announcing its latest and greatest during the keynote speech of their World Wide Developers Conference. With upgrades to their MacBook and MacBook Pro lines, Safari, Quick Time and Snow Leopard  they did not disappoint but in the last three years people only want to know about the iPhone.

Apple reaffirmed the features that were announced with the 3.0 software (available June 17th free for iPhone 9.99 iPod Touch) and are available on many cheaper phones.  Things like cut/copy/paste and turn by turn directions (Tom Tom is working on an app).  Other things that will be available but only if your carrier approves.  An example of this would be MMS and Tethering. MMS allows you to send pictures in a text message and AT&T is waiting until later this summer to allow that feature.  Why, haven’t we waited long enough?  I was able to do this up until I bought the iPhone.  Tethering will allow you to connect your phone to a computer and they computer will be able to use the internet connection from the phone, AT&T will not allow the function for its customers.  Why?  I believe they want to sell air cards for laptops to have internetaccess over the 3G network, with a monthly fee.

iPhone 3G S (the S stands for speed) has been announced.  The new iPhone will have the same look as the 3G but the inside will be a bit different.  It will be able to use AT&T’s upgraded 3G service for faster browsing speeds.  New 3 megapixel camera with the option for still or video images.  The camera app will have a Tap to Focus feature, tap the screen and the camera will focus on that spot.  Video editing on the phone and email pictures and video, if AT&T will be so kinda to allow us this.  Voice control, yea another feature many phones have but can you ask your phone what song is playing?  The iPhone will tell you what song is playing when asked, I’d use this feature once.  Zero to 50 percent better battery life on video, wifi and talk time.

Price for 3G S $199 16gig and $299 32gig, available June 19th.  The 8gig 3G iPhone will be available June 8th for $99.

Joystiq’s Justin McElroy has me all excited

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

If you were an arcade dweller in the very late ’90s, you probably remember Silent Scope as “that game with the big fake gun that zooms in when you look in the scope.” If you were an enterprising TV reporter doing a half-baked story on video games that are training our kids to be killers in the past decade, you likely remember Silent Scope as “my B-roll footage.”

Now, the game is making the leap to a gun-free version on iPhone. It’s a bummer that it’s losing that great peripheral, but we’re actually pretty excited about the prospect of pushing our iPhones to our eyes and peering through them like some sort of confused, high-tech sea captain

Free iPhone dev classes @ Stanford University.

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Thanks to a tip from fellow NW23′er, Josh, I will now be learning how to develop for Apple’s massively popular iPhone for free - courtsey of Stanford University.

Interested parties will need an Intel based Mac and the free iPhone SDK (software development kit). In order to download the SDK, you also need to sign up to be a part of Apple’s Developer Connection (also free).

The website for the course can be found here, and it contains the first lecture’s materials. I assume this site will be updated as the course progresses. I just downloaded all the materials and I’ll update my progress here on the site.
